Omega-3 How I Love Thee

High in Omega 3s and done in 15 mins

Lately I’ve been reading up on anti-inflammatory foods. There are generally 10 they list and the one I seem to love the most is Salmon. It’s good because of the Omega-3 it provides, which is the good kind of fats we need. The Japanese can attest to that. So for dinner last night I had no problem whipping up a grilled salmon with lemon, salt pepper and the liquid aminos. Still working on finishing my spinach and mushrooms from this week too. Salmon cooks fast and only takes 3-5 mins per side depending on the thickness of your cut. This is a 15 minutes meal with one grill pan, so even lazy people can do this.

Taco Bell Gluten-Filler

Ok. Here’s how I might redeem myself. The Onion has this funny bit with a part at around the 1:00 minute mark which shows gluten-filler. Pretty funny stuff.

Taco Bell’s New Green Menu Takes No Ingredients From Nature

Random Observation: Flossing is Easier Sans Gluten

Flossy floss

I’m not sure if I’m imaging things or whether this is a true observation of being off of gluten for one week. When I’m flossing, I notice there’s just less gunk in my teeth. If I’ve grossed you out already, I’m so sorry but it’s the nature of this blog.

When I really think about this, it makes sense. Gluten is defined by Dictionary.com as “the tough, viscid, nitrogenous substance remaining when the flour of wheat or other grain is washed to remove the starch,” or “glue or a gluey substance.” It makes sense that a gluey substance would be more prone to stick to your teeth.

This blog sounds like an article out of The Onion, but less funny and less thought out. My apologies. Let me think of the ways to give you back the last 2 minutes of reading.

Doritos vs. Popcorn – Cheese on Cheese Action

Some people are Nacho Cheesier and some are Cool Ranch Dorito type people. Personally I’m a Cool Ranch kind of gal but somehow Nacho is here and my nemesis for today. There’s a big bag leftover in my kitchen pre-9/14/09. To make Doritos feel really uncomfortable I’ve placed TJs White Chedder Popcorn right next to it. It’s like they’re both here to have a good time, but only one is going to get asked to dance. I’ve made a list of Pros and Cons of each.

Unfair match?

Hmmm, this isn’t how I was expecting this fight for a dance to go. Doritos won. Maybe it wasn’t a fair fight. I’ll have to rig up another match and until then, me and Popcorn are going to dance awhile and Doritos is going to have to stop looking so darn tempting.

Almond Milk, It Does a Body Good

Almond Milk, It Does a Body Good

Smooth and creamy almond milk. It does a body good.

Most mornings I start off with a cup of Pacific brand almond milk. So tasty and totally gluten-free. My friend turned me on to this about a year ago. It’s great next to regular milk and I find it really smooth compared to soy milk. There’s a little hint of nuttiness which makes it pretty addictive. Even if you like milk you will love this, it’s like dessert but for breakfast. I’m not even lactose intolerant, I have ice cream and butter and all, but there’s something about this little nut.  However, I will need to better manage my calcium source since somehow this milk doesn’t seem to have very much. I always thought almonds were really high in calcium naturally, but somehow this drink lacks it. Thumb down for that.

Many people have mixed feelings with dairy, but there is generally a common theme between the two sides that calcium is good for your bones, hair and skin.

Sunday AKC Scramble

Sunday AKC Scramble

It’s a slow Sunday and I’m feeling like something hearty. Today I make a simple egg scramble. There really wasn’t much effort to make a gluten-free breakfast. I’d eat this any day and probably everyone has had something like this, but just never thought it was gluten-free. Ingredients are :

One egg – I gotta keep up my proteins. Fried red and white potato Brown mushrooms Little thyme, salt, pepper and Tapatio to taste – Tapatio makes the world go round. Parmessan to top

I’m eating and watching an AKC dog show on ESPN HD and as the Terrier Group goes by, I’m feeling good.

Anatomy of My Alligator Skin

Anatomy of My Alligator Skin

Some of the areas of my alligator skin I am trying to manage are the typical eczema trouble spots, in order of most obnoxious.

Neck, chin and jawline- I’m coming apart at the seams and I can’t turn my neck all the way because it stings. Eyelid and eyebrows – No idea why here, there’s no sweat glands (correction: there are sweat glands in our eyelids). I look like a red panda but less cute. Inside and outside elbows – Comes and goes the quickest from here. Behind the knees – Not so itchy and bothersome, but looks the most horrific. Like I’m hanging myself from my knees all the time. Upper lip – Stopped using SoftLips and it’s already getting better.

For a better representation I’ve added some images to help depict where it hurts and the anatomy of my alligator skin. I’m using sock monkeys to represent a normal person. Exhibit A is a normal sock monkey. Lots of color, happy and healthy. Exhibit B is dull, has lots of itchy pain areas and looks plain ole crazy. By day 90 I hope this improves.

After sending out my blog announcement I got some really awesome support and hilarious comments too! Here’s some of my favorites.

“I have this eczema rash and my doctor asked if I was near any strippers in Vegas.”

“..maybe gluten makes (him) cough all the f***ing time”

“Your email sounds like spam, is this real?”

“I am a robot. Gluten must be destrooooooyed.”

Some links to recipes too.

First Temptations: Pretzels and Oktoberfest

Last night I met up with some friends for happy hour at a local brewery. It’s my first time really going out to eat since starting this journey. First thing that comes to mind is Beer and lots of it. What will I do? Suddenly I’m feeling bit apathetic and thinking this is what it must feel like to not drink. *ahem*

I end up ordering a glass of wine, which a fly dives into minutes after I take my first sip. It’s bad omen. This infested fly is telling me “why even bother, just have a sip of the beer, it’s soo much better and in a litre mug.” Fly said that really. Wine gets switched and Fly gets banished away. All is good again.

I got over the beer thing quickly but then my real temptation came. Some friends ordered some pretzels and I nearly cried on sight when the waitress dropped it on the table with beer mustard. I drooled, took a picture and I’m still thinking about it.

With Oktoberfest starting all over, I need to start figuring out some ways to still have my jagerschnitzel, sausages and spaetzel without breaking this promise I’ve made. Any good recipes send ‘em my way.
